SUMMARY:Lecture - Simon Yates - Pleasure and Pain
DESCRIPTION:Simon Yates sprang into the climbing world’s consciousness nearly 40 years ago with his rescue of Joe Simpson on the descent from Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes\, graphically described in the book and film “Touching the Void”. Since then\, he has enjoyed a productive mountaineering career\, leading parties on trips to remote ranges in Asia\, Tierra del Fuego and Greenland\, and undertaking many successful expeditions with some of the best of British climbers. All passed without major incident. However\, on a recent attempt on Patkhor in Tajikistan with Mick Fowler\, things certainly went a bit off script. Food/sickness problems and a failing abseil anchor on the descent from this remote 6083m peak led to a long drawn out epic of self rescue\, ending with his first bit of medical attention in Cumberland Infirmary more than a week after a big fall.So come and hear the full story from our local (Eden Valley) resident in this comfortable venue with a licensed bar. Simon will be available to answer any questions afterwards and will have copies of his books for sale. Surplus funds from this lecture will be donated to Community Action Nepal.
